Why DataJoint

DataJoint envisions a transformation in the scientific method, where scientists work together as a global team, taking on daring projects powered by the frictionless flow of data and computation.

Breakthrough neuroscience—reverse engineering the brain—requires automated research workflows with advanced instruments, computation, and collaboration tools.

That transformation requires a strong foundation: robust computational data pipelines that guarantee data integrity and reproducibility of results—a foundation that Datajoint is delivering today. Our open-source toolkit and cloud service enable your neuroscience team to operate experimental pipelines. With DataJoint, you can solve existing problems faster and tackle new problems in fundamentally new ways.

Neuroscience Data Pipelines and Computational Workflows

Neuroscientists face challenges at every stage of an experiment. Getting a project off the ground may take months of configuration and coding. Recording requires systems, infrastructure, and significant effort to keep data organized. Passing data between processing tools can lead to unnoticed errors. Analysis and publishing for open access takes further coding and integration.

DataJoint addresses each of these challenges. With our tools and systems, you can set up a pipeline, evolve it over time, and operate your project for its entire lifecycle.

Prepare. You can choose a standard pipeline or build your own with our library of components. DataJoint serves as your Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) with simple graphical interfaces for colony management, genotyping, treatments, and procedures.

Record. DataJoint captures the data you record, linked with your subject’s ELN history. Our cloud service can even upload and tag your data automatically. We keep your data secure and shareable for the duration of your project.

Compute. DataJoint automates the steps that transform your raw data into neuronal signals. Our architecture unifies source data, parameters, and computational pipeline, giving you reproducible results. With our cloud service, we manage all computing for you.

Analyze. DataJoint includes tools for team-based exploration and discovery. Our query language and interactive visualizations help navigate and analyze large data sets. DataJoint creates visibility to help you coordinate projects and reuse data across your lab.

Publish. DataJoint works with BRAIN Initiative projects like DANDI and NWB for publication required by the NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy. On our cloud service, you can add guests and collaborators anytime.

DataJoint: A New Operating System for Science

We call our product stack “a new operating system for science”. You set up a computational pipeline, and DataJoint operates it for you. You get to draw from a growing library of components. With a single integration, a developer can enable their new instrument or algorithm to work in any DataJoint pipeline.

DataJoint Works is our managed service that operates end-to-end neuroscience experiments in the cloud. Our design approach is to enable researchers to focus on the parts of the experimental workflow that truly require human input, direction, and creativity, and then automate the rest!

DataJoint Elements is our library of plug-and-play pipeline components that offers flexibility and reliability in setting up your experiment. We curate these open-source components from leading labs and regularly update them to support the latest developments.

DataJoint Core is our open-source toolkit for defining and operating computational data pipelines—sequences of steps for data acquisition, processing, and transformation. By extending prior database technologies to encompass data and computation, DataJoint Core provides the foundation for reproducible science, collaboration, and automation.

DataJoint’s library of standardized software components, DataJoint Elements, is developed with the support of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke under Award Number U24NS116470. Our cloud service platform, DataJoint Works, is supported under Award Number R44NS129492.

Over 100 neuroscience labs rely on DataJoint.

DataJoint is working to create a frictionless flow of data and information for neuroscience teams. Our neuroscience team actively partners with research labs on initiatives to develop new tools and techniques for computational neuroscience and disseminate them to the community.
